Week 4

Image
I have definitely learned a lot from doing this senior project. Even though it was only four weeks, I feel like I got a good view on what it is truly like to work on a farm. Through doing things myself and watching Lyn, Juvencio, and Polly, I saw how much goes into running and operating a successful farm. I wrote a little bit about this last week, but one thing that I really realized was how much weather impacts the work. It is a big factor in whether or not things will grow and when they need to planted. It also really affects wildlife within the farm as well as your own work (if it is really hot it is a lot harder to do work in the greenhouses whereas if it is super cold and rainy it is harder to do stuff outside).  I am really glad that I got the opportunity to do this as my project. It gave me an insight into what the first step in the food industry is like. I feel like I didn't really know very much about it before because this part of the food industry isn't widely disc...

Week 3

I didn't write about last friday in my week 2 post because we leave the farm at 6:30 so I can't write my post before the weekly deadline, but one funny thing that happened last Friday was that we had to plant more leeks. The day before we planted leeks in some really bad weather for a pretty long time, so hearing that we had to plant more was a bit of an unwelcome surprise . But to tell you the truth, it was fun on friday! I think that it is mostly because the weather was so much nicer. Thursday was cold and windy, but friday was beautiful and sunny. I am pretty sure we even spent the same amount of time planting on friday but the time went by extremely quickly. This really made me realize how much weather can make a difference.  This week has been hot and sunny weather which actually has a pretty big impact on what we do. Because it gets so hot we have been doing some different jobs such as cleaning out a room in the barn and planting areas that have a bit more shade....

Week 2

The week isn't even over and I already feel like so much more has happened in comparison to last week. The past two days at the farm have been full of a ton of different things and I still have one more day left to work this week! Wednesday was definitely my favorite day so far because we happened to see a bunch of cute baby animals. There was a tiny birds nest in one of the greenhouses that we were working in and there was a bunch of baby birds in it! The nest itself was really small and the baby birds were so tiny! They barely have any feather fluff and were packed into the little nest. It was kind of hard to tell how many were in the nest but they kept opening their mouths and moving around, it was a really cool thing to get to see. That same day we got to feed a baby cow as well. The farm has cows and one of them died when she had a baby so Juvencio (one of the heads of La Finquita del Buho) had to rescue the newly born calf and take him in his car to their farm and he has to b...

Week 1

For my project I am working at two farms with Tulip, Pumpkin Ridge and La Finquita del Buho. I chose to do this particular project for a couple of reasons. First off, I really did not want to do a project that was on zoom or in the form of classes in any way. I wanted to do something that was a complete change in scenery and something that I have never really done before. I also thought that working on a farm would allow me to learn more about how farms work. I feel like I don't really know anything about this area of the food industry and I already have learned more about it.  After working for a week, we have done a lot of weeding, transplanting plants at different stages of life, harvesting, and organizing. The farms that we work with provide customers with a CSA and they also sell plant starts at the Saturday famers market in Beaverton. There is a lot of organization and preparation that goes into the farmers market and so that is one of the things we have been helping most wit...
